English

The English curriculum aims to ensure students learn to purposefully and proficiently read, view, listen to, speak, write, create and reflect on increasingly complex texts across a growing range of contexts. Our goal is for all students at St Michael’s to become competent readers. In English, teachers use a Low Variance Curriculum (LVC) devised by Catholic Education Canberra/Goulburn (CECG) aligned with the Australian Curriculum. Through explicit, direct instruction, teachers ensure students develop skills in decoding texts, reading fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, grammar, writing, listening and speaking. Students are introduced to rich texts and encouraged to develop all aspects of language usage in a 2 hour English block. The library is a focal point for creating a love of literature, with weekly borrowing to enable all students to access relevant, engaging and stimulating literature. Teachers use quality assessment to gather student data and provide targeted support and intervention where required.
