Here is some information and a great article about a Canberra based charity Water Wombats
https://canberraweekly.com.au/canberra-mum-on-a-mission-to-see-all-kids-safe-in-the-water/
Mainstream Learn-to-Swim programs are often busy and overwhelming for children with additional needs, have anxiety or just need extra support to learn a new skill.
The WaterWombats program offers a number of flexible, innovative techniques and fresh methodologies. But at the core of our mission, lies our commitment to providing an engaging, respectful and rewarding learning environment.
The program will also be offering Aqua therapy by Allied Health professionals.
The organisation is also involved in the Giving Day Appeal (8 March) organised by Hands across Canberra – So we are actively looking at donations/sponsorships through this campaign and to call people to action for change and keeping support locally!
It would be awesome if the St Michael's community could rally around to get us over the line. Funds will be put to supporting the family support program – which is a paid counsellor/social worker to support families with challenges such as the NDIS, behaviours or support networks.

Religious Education News - Lisa Mammoliti
Religious Education News
This week we begin the annual observance of Lent. You may want to consider: ‘How am I to celebrate this season in 2023?’ The word ‘Lent’ comes from the Old English word lencten meaning springtime or ‘the lengthening of days’; it is a time of renewal. In keeping with the season, Lent can be an invitation to our own renewal in the ways of living with and for God; a time to recognise the love of God made visible to us in creation; a time to notice those ways in which we fall short of the desires that God has for each one of us and for our world, and to pray for the grace to live more fully according to God’s ways.
We are familiar with ‘giving up for Lent’: perhaps this year our ‘giving up’ may be of those things in our lives that are getting in the way of valuing all that God has given us, of allowing God to deepen God’s life in us. It may help to take time to notice and to speak with our Lord about what this means for me. (From Australian Catholics.)
Project Compassion
Last week, the season of Lent began with Ash Wednesday, which also marks the beginning of the annual Caritas Australia Project Compassion Appeal. Donations to Project Compassion allow Caritas Australia, the Catholic Agency for International Aid and Development, to work with local communities around the world to end poverty, promote justice and uphold dignity.
The theme of Project Compassion 2023 is ‘For All Future Generations’ and reminds us that the good we do today extends to impact the lives of generations to come. It invites us to make the world a better place by working together now and finding long-term solutions to global issues. We encourage you to put your compassion into action this Lent through prayer, fasting and almsgiving in support of Project Compassion. This week each family will receive a Project Compassion box and/or a set of envelopes for their donations or you can donate online via the Caritas Australia website at: www.caritas.org.au/project-compassion.
First Week of Lent (Week beginning Monday 27th February)
We begin our annual Lenten Project Compassion journey by learning about Laxmi, a 16-year-old girl living in Jajarkot, a remote district in Nepal where almost half of the population live below the poverty line. Tragedy struck when Laxmi was 10 years old and her father passed away. Her father worked hard to pay for his children's education and, after losing him, Laxmi was at risk of falling further into extreme poverty.
With the support of our partner Caritas Nepal, Laxmi joined a child's club at her school where she was encouraged to resume her education. Through the child’s club, Laxmi developed the skills and confidence to become a leader, advocating for clean water taps at her school.
Laxmi is now excelling in her studies and working towards her dream of becoming a civil engineer. She continues to be involved in the child's club, serving as an advisor and mentoring the next generation of young leaders at her old school.
Watch a short film about Laxmi’s story here.
After School AFL Sessions
We are fortunate to be able to offer a 4 week after school AFL program this term. The sessions will take place on Tuesday afternoons commencing 7th March. Registration details can be found on the flyer.
SCHOOL SPORT ACT TRIALS – Please keep an eye on the School Sport ACT website www.schoolsportact.asn.au for upcoming ACT trials. The process for registering can be found below. If you need any assistance registering your child please feel free to ask for assistance.
How to register your child with School Sport ACT
School Sport ACT now collects all registration information online – this is to prevent the movement to and fro of a paper note and have all information readily available to officials prior to the trial. As this process incurs a fee for data storage, system maintenance and admin, a small $5 fee payment via credit card will be required.
- Go to the School Sport ACT website – www.schoolsportact.asn.au
- Click Register (top right corner of homepage) for an Account – enter parent details and password
- A confirmation email will be sent to your chosen email that will contain a link that you must click on to verify the email account.
- Click Log In (top right hand corner of home page) enter password then click on top tab My Profile
- You will see a ‘dashboard’ of your information, click green box to Add Student – enter student and medical details and save.
- Go to the Sports Tab – choose your specific sport, click on Trial Information box then click on the Register to Trial link.
- Select your child’s name from the dropdown box and then enter the optional fields for Playing History, Preferred Position (if applicable) and Representative Experience. If you are already in the system, ensure your child’s school is up to date in your profile – have they moved onto High School?
Please contact me via email if you have any questions, feedback or are able to offer your assistance at any of our sporting events throughout the year.
Looking forward to another big year of sporting participation.
