Religious Education News - Meaghan Younger
RE in 1/2
Did you know the Bible is not just a book? In fact it’s more accurately described as a library. It contains many different books and styles of writing. This term students in Years One and Two will be looking closely at the ‘books’ in the New Testament and learning about the different forms of writing contained with it. The New Testament tells us the story of Jesus’ life here on earth, but also helps us understand his mission and ministry. The New Testament also tells us about life in the Early Church and encourages us all to continue to live as Jesus taught.
Religious Life of St Michael’s
NAIDOC Week
Thank you to 5/6 who led the whole school in prayer so beautifully last Friday. It was lovely to see how maturely they shared prayer for NAIDOC Week with the younger classes.
Winter Woolies Day
This Friday, 29th July we will hold our annual Winter Woolies Day. As usual children are invited to wear warm Winter Woolies (or Pyjamas or an oodie or a onesie if they wish) and in return to bring in a donation of warm winter clothing for donation to St Vincent de Paul. Suggestions from St Vincent de Paul of Winter essentials include socks (new only please), blankets, beanies, gloves, jumpers and coats. During the day we will hold some special activities to raise awareness in the children of life for homeless people within our own Canberra community. We will also be visited by the Night Patrol Van and see how it works to support the poor in Canberra.
Children are also invited to bring a gold coin donation for a hot milo at Recess. All money raised will be donated to the Night Patrol Van by St Vincent de Paul.

Author Visit
We are excited to welcome Anna Battese to our school on Tuesday, 16th August. Anna will speak to our K-2 classes about her new books and what she loves about being a writer. If you would like to purchase either of Anna’s books please see the attached order form. Anna will personalise and sign the copies on the day of her visit.
Chief Minister’s Reading – Finishing Soon!
Congratulations to all the students who have already completed this year’s challenge! We even have some students who have completed the challenge multiple times and now have more than one entry in our prize draw. There are only 3 weeks to go until the challenge officially ends on the 19th August. All completed forms must be returned to school by no later than Friday 19th August.
Book Fair
We will host our annual book fair in Week 5 from the 15th – 19th August! After a few years of COVID restrictions preventing us having our fair, we are hopeful that this year our fair will still be able to go ahead. We may need to limit the fair to only students but would very much appreciate your support. A generous percentage from the sales comes to the school as rewards and we use this money to purchase additional books for our own library. The students are looking forward to having this much loved event, so we will keep our fingers crossed!
Children's Book Council of Australia Book Week
This year’s theme for Book Week is ‘Dreaming with Eyes Open’ and we are very much looking word to our celebrations here at school during Week 6. Our dress up day will be held on Friday 26th August. We encourage students to take inspiration from the theme or from their favourite book. We can’t wait to see everyone’s costumes in the parade!
We are also excited to be welcoming some authors to school to talk to our students about their latest books and what inspires them in their writing.
Overdue Library Books
A number of students have overdue library books. We would appreciate these being returned to school over the coming weeks. Overdue slips will be sent home in Week 4. Thank you for your help with this.
Hockey Clinics
All classes will participate in hockey clinics this term. The clinics will take place on Tuesday from Week 3 – 6 and are being run by ACT Hockey. We successfully obtained and grant from Sporting Schools which is being used to fund the lessons.
Boorowa Touch and Netball Carnival
We are proceeding with our plans to again enter teams in this year’s Boorowa touch and netball carnival. It is fantastic day that sees thousands of students from country and city schools both government and public come to support the town of Boorowa and the wider community. Today, interested students met with Mrs Hardwicke to find out a little more about the day. If you would like your child to participate please return the permission note via Compass. We will enter teams based on the responses we receive via Compass and ask that you respond by no later than Friday 5th August. Once we have confirmed our numbers we will send teams lists home. Please note that on some occasions we are unable to enter teams due to not having a sufficient number of players. It is also a requirement of the organisers that each team is able to provide a coach, umpire/referee and manager. We are dependent on parent volunteers for these roles, so if you are able to help please let us know by answering the questions on the Compass form. We greatly appreciate your support, but it is even more greatly appreciated by our students.
