Dear Parents/carers,
I am thrilled to announce an exciting event next term!
Do you want to know the latest information about approaches to teaching reading and practical strategies you can use at home? We are privileged to be hosting Dr Lorraine Hammond, researcher and lecturer from Edith Cowan University in Perth, WA. Lorraine has been working with teachers across Australia about the best ways to teach reading. Data from WA shows that her methods are incredibly successful! What an amazing opportunity this is for our families at St Michael’s. You will need to get in quick, by booking on our google sheet. Spaces are limited so bookings are essential.

What a wonderful term it has been, we’ve had Meet and Greet, First Eucharist, Swimming Carnival, camp, professional learning for teachers, Vinnies Knock on effect day and goal setting interviews just to name a few! To put the icing on the cake, tomorrow is Harmony Day, a day of remembering and celebrating who we are at St Michael’s; a strong community sharing compassion, kindness and forgiveness. This term I have had the privilege of witnessing our amazing school staff and families supporting each other and giving others the courage and support to face things they find difficult.
Thank you everyone for your enthusiasm and dedication, may you be truly abundantly blessed with the new life of Jesus this Easter season.
Judy Egan
Principal
Welcome to Week 9 and Happy Easter Everyone!
I cannot believe that we are already one term down for 2021. It has been a brilliant start to the year, but boy has it gone fast! The challenges that we faced at the beginning of last year meant that all the staff at the school haven’t taken the calm start to year for granted.
We are very thankful for all staff at our wonderful school, helping many new students settle in quickly and ensuring that returning students picked up from where they left off. We have had an action-packed term with some highlights including: Water fun day and swimming carnival, Questacon Science Visits, Year 5/6 Camp, and the Sacrament of First Communion just to name a few!
We have also had a great deal of success in revisiting our ‘Keys for Learning’ and ensuring they we are a living part of the culture of our school. We have a great success in this space and the teachers have included this in our weekly awards, acknowledging the great work of students in using the keys to break open their learning and deepening their understandings.
Sustainability Update
Are you interested in gardening, growing seeds, horticulture and aquaculture? Our St Michael’s Greenhouse needs you!
Inviting any families who would like to be part of our St Michael’s Sustainability Group. Please contact Esther Coghlan mecoghlan05@gmail.com or speak to Damien Webb.
We would like to thank everyone who helps maintain our Greenhouse.
Once again, thank you for a fantastic Term 1. It has been a very productive term and we are only able to be successful due to the fantastic partnerships that are formed with home.
Have a safe and happy Easter break and enjoy time with family and friends.
Many thanks
Mr Webb
HOLY WEEK
Holy Week is a very special and sacred time of the year, for it is now that we commemorate and remember the last week of Jesus' life on this earth. These are the days leading up to the great Easter Feast. The greatest focus of the week is the Passion (suffering) and Resurrection of Jesus Christ and the events that led up to it.
Thank you to the following classes for preparing our Holy Week Reflections. Classes have been enjoying the presentations and reflecting on the meaning of each Scripture passage. The creativity and personal responses by the students to each Holy Week reflection has been thoughtful and reverent.
On Friday 26th we started our celebrations with 3/4L’s presentation of ‘Palm Sunday’. 3/4L inspired us with their clever illustrations of Matthew’s Gospel (21:1-11) depicting the Palm Sunday story. All the students enjoyed joining in to sing ‘Sing it Hosana’.
Monday 29th March, 3/4A shared John’s Gospel (13:1-20) story about ‘Washing of the Feet’ . The students read the Gospel passage and we reflected on the meaning. We were inspired by the following words 3/4A shared…
“Jesus came to show us how we should live. One of the lessons that Jesus wanted us to learn was how to be a servant to others. A servant is a person who does the work for another. When your mum or dad cooks you something to eat, they are being a loving servant for you; they don’t expect anything in return.
Jesus wanted the disciples to know that being a servant is more important than gaining wealth, power, or position. A servant does not receive a lot of praise or credit; they work solely for the lives of others.”
On Tuesday 30th March, 1/2H shared ‘A New Commandment’ (John 13: 31-35) We heard the important message…
“Love one another, as I have loved you”
This is the simplest way to live a life like Jesus has intended.
Treat all people, as you yourself would like to be treated
This was Jesus’ message to his disciples after ‘The last Supper’ and summed up all his teaching one simple rule – one that we all continue to try to live by each and every day.
We were reminded to follow the Golden Rule and treat other people as we would like
to be treated.
Today 31st March, 1/2B took us on a journey together through the ‘Last Supper’ (Mt 26:26-30). The students were asked to close their eyes as they listened to a song and had to imagine themselves sitting at the table with Jesus and his friends at The Last Supper. They were asked what they were thinking and what they would have asked Jesus. The student responses showed the depth of this experience.
We then participated in a self-guided tour of the Stations of the Cross that 5/6K had creatively put together. It was an opportunity to stop, question, think and respond to the many different stations depicted in a variety of ways.
Tomorrow we will respond to 5/6F’s prayer experience of ‘Praying in the Garden of
Gethsemane’ from (Mt 26:36-46). Students will Light candles and take part in a Taize prayer experience.
We wish everyone a safe and Holy Easter.

How to register your child with School Sport ACT
School Sport ACT now collects all registration information online – this is to prevent the movement to and fro of a paper note and have all information readily available to officials prior to the trial. As this process incurs a fee for data storage, system maintenance and admin, a small $5 fee payment via credit card will be required.
- Go to the School Sport ACT website – https://schoolsportact.org.au/
- Click Register (top right corner of homepage) for an Account – enter parent details and password
- A confirmation email will be sent to your chosen email that will contain a link that you must click on to verify the email account.
- Click Log In (top right hand corner of home page) enter password then click on top tab My Profile
- You will see a ‘dashboard’ of your information, click green box to Add Student – enter student and medical details and save.
- Go to the Sports Tab – choose your specific sport, click on Trial Information box then click on the Register to Trial link.
- Select your child’s name from the dropdown box and then enter the optional fields for Playing History, Preferred Position (if applicable) and Representative Experience. If you are already in the system, ensure your child’s school is up to date in your profile – have they moved onto High School?
Please contact me via email if you have any questions, feedback or are able to offer your assistance at any of our sporting events throughout the year.
Looking forward to another big year of sporting participation,
