Father's Day Breakfast and Mass
A reminder we are hosting our Father's Day Breakfast tomorrow morning between 7.30-8.30am in the Tuckshop Area. Thanks to all those who rsvp'd as it assists with catering purposes. Our Father's Day Mass will follow later in the morning at 9.30am. All most welcome to attend.
Peer Support
This term students have been thoroughly enjoying Peer Support. Our Year 5 and 6 leaders have been leading the rest of the school through our program, which is all about optimism. Student's have explored what activities at home and school make them happy and what their individual strengths and talents are. Next week's lesson focuses on positive self talk. All students need to practise talking positively to themselves. Children will also explore the importance of perseverance, especially when faced with a challenging situation. During the upcoming week please encourage the use of positive self talk in your home.
Garden Update
You will see over the coming weeks as we move into Spring, that we are continuing our upgrade of our landscaping and gardens. The wire fence around the water tank has come down as this was blocking student access to the garden beds in that space. In Week 8, those garden beds will be turned into our Bush Tucker Garden housing native herbs and plants. During the holidays, we are hoping to install a 'yarning circle' in the grass space next to the water tank. This will be a wooden seating area for students to utilise during eating and playtimes and for classes to utilise during the day for outdoor prayer and lessons. We will continue to add special elements throughout the playgrounds to celebrate the start of Spring.
CE Maths K-2 Cluster Day
On Tuesday we will once again host 30 teachers from across our Archdiocese for a day of Maths learning. Leonie Anstey, Maths Consultant will lead teachers (including all four of our K-2 teachers) through deepening their knowledge and skills to increase engagement and student learning outcomes in Mathematics.
Key Personal Day - Friday 30 August
On Friday, Meaghan Younger (REC), Fr Loi (Parish Priest) and myself will join all other RECs, Principals and Parish Priests from across the Archdiocese. This is a day where we can collaboratively work together focusing on the Religious Education Curriculum, Sacramental Programs and Faith Formation. Damien Webb will be at school on Friday should you need to contact an Execuitve Member.
Father's Day
Father’s Day is a special day in which we celebrate the role of fathers and the contributions they make to the lives of their children. The definition of fathers is not restricted to a biological father. It also includes step-fathers, grandfathers, fathers-in-law, male relatives, significant males and spiritual fathers. We thank all our Fathers and Father-like figures who are there for us each and everyday. We also keep all those Fathers in our prayers who have passed or are not able to be with their children.
'God, we ask your blessing on all our Fathers, whom you have entrusted fatherhood. May your Holy Spirit constantly inspire them with justice and mercy, wisdom and strength, patience and self-giving love. May they receive your grace abundantly, and may they come to experience you through the care and love they give to us. Amen'.
Enjoy the week ahead.
Regards,
Pat Ellis
Principal
Confirmation
Masses
Tomorrow, Thursday 29 August, we will share Mass together again as we celebrate the gift of our Fathers. 1/2M are very excited to be preparing this Mass for the whole school. Mass in St Michael’s Church will begin at 9:30am. All families, especially fathers, uncles, grandfathers and all special men in our lives are warmly invited to join us at this liturgical celebration.
Whole School Prayer Time
Thank you to 3/4YM for your beautiful Whole School Prayer Time last week. It was a lovely way to explore how we can support and be supported as we grow our faith lives.
Global School Partners
It was lovely to catch up with Simon from Global School Partners last Friday and to hear about our partner school, Jariah Education Centre. Remember to save the date of Sunday 27October for our Jumpfest. This day the money raised will go to Jariah Education Centre to assist with providing a water tank for safe, clean and accessible water for the children.
The app of the week is Google Keep. This handy notetaking app allows the user to capture, draw, share,
record and edit notes and make them a collaborative list for others to add to or change. Record a voice memo with the microphone, get reminders about a note that you made, or create to-do lists and watch them get marked off in real time.
Surrealism is a style in art and literature in which ideas, images, and objects are combined in a strange way, like in a dream.
When was the Surrealism movement?
The movement began in the mid-1920s in France and was born out of an earlier movement called Dadaism from Switzerland.
What are the characteristics of Surrealism?
Surrealism images explored the subconscious areas of the mind. The artwork often made little sense as it was usually trying to depict a dream or random thoughts.
We will learn about the Surrealist artists, René Magritte and Joan Miró.
Over the next two weeks the students will work with marker pens, interpreting Miró’s style in their own work.
Friday 30 August – Big Dreams Performance
Our whole school will come together for the ‘Big Dreams’ performance in the Hall at 9:10. The performance links together the themes of the CBCA shortlisted books for this year.

Changes to School Sport ACT
From the commencement of this year there will no longer be Belconnen Region level trials for specific sports. To replace the regional level completion, many sports are holding gala days for schools to attend. We will enter teams in these gala days where there is student interest. The pathway for selection to an ACT sporting team is through trials offered in the same way as they have been previously. Please see the information below in relation to the process of registering your child for ACT trials on the School Sport ACT website.
SCHOOL SPORT ACT TRIALS
Please keep an eye on the School Sport ACT website www.schoolsportact.asn.au for upcoming ACT trials. The process for registering can be found below. If you need any assistance registering your child please feel free to ask for assistance.
How to register your child with School Sport ACT
School Sport ACT now collects all registration information online – this is to prevent the movement to and fro of a paper note and have all information readily available to officials prior to the trial. As this process incurs a fee for data storage, system maintenance and admin, a small $5 fee payment via credit card will be required.
- Go to the School Sport ACT website – schoolsportact.asn.au
- Click Register (top right corner of homepage) for an Account – enter parent details and password
- A confirmation email will be sent to your chosen email that will contain a link that you must click on to verify the email account.
- Click Log In (top right hand corner of home page) enter password then click on top tab My Profile
- You will see a ‘dashboard’ of your information, click green box to Add Student – enter student and medical details and save.
- Go to the Sports Tab – choose your specific sport, click on Trial Information box then click on the Register to Trial link.
- Select your child’s name from the dropdown box and then enter the optional fields for Playing History, Preferred Position (if applicable) and Representative Experience. If you are already in the system, ensure your child’s school is up to date in your profile – have they moved onto High School?
- Make the $5 credit card payment then click to register.
- An automated email will then be sent to your Principal/School Approver for their approval to trial (no need to take anything to school for the Principal to sign).
- You will be able to see the process has been complete back in My Profile – once your Principal/School Approver has completed the approval process your child’s information will be collated onto a list for the Team Manager and Coach prior to trial.
- Note the registration process closes two days before the first trial date to allow sufficient time for approval and sharing of collated information.
Looking forward to another big year of sporting participation,
Erin Hardwicke
