Dear Parents and Carers,
If your child wants to talk about orchestras or learning to play a musical instrument, it is because we had an impromptu visit from the St Patrick’s high school band from Launceston Tasmania on Monday. An email came across my desk and I decided to take the opportunity of a free concert- so glad I did! To save a visit to Maccas, we put on a sausage sizzle for them! Special thanks to Kim K for firing up the BBQ and to Maria P for helping me out with the hospitality. The students were thrilled and amazed by the orchestra- it’s wonderful when we can share opportunities to experience Music in this way.
I think music in itself is healing. It's an explosive expression of humanity. It's something we are all touched by. No matter what culture we're from, everyone loves music. (Billy Joel)
Leaders Retreat
The theme at Galong for Principals this term was truth, beauty and goodness. On Wednesday last week we spent the night at the monastery and reflected on the Parable of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10: 25-37). On Thursday morning we celebrated Mass with Father Emil.
I have included some images of the Monastery and the mosaic of Our Lady Help of Christians in the grotto, a special image for our community.
None of us are perfect. We can only do our best in a world that doesn’t necessarily value kindness, dignity and justice. Like the Good Samaritan, Jesus teaches us to have courage and to stand up for those less fortunate. When I think of truth, beauty and goodness I think of all the children in our community- specially loved by Jesus.
Finally a shout out to all our Dads, step-Dads and special men in our lives for Father’s Day on Sunday this weekend. Thank you to all our wonderful mums for helping at our Father’s Day stall. I hope you have a wonderful day, spending time with those you love.
Many blessings,
Congratulations to the following students who achieved a Harmony Award this week.
Well done!!

Father’s Day
Father's Day is a special celebration honouring fathers, father figures, fatherhood, paternal bonds, and the influence of fathers in society. This Sunday we will celebrate the fathers in our lives. We especially thank all the St Michael’s Dads for their love and support and ask God to bless them always. We hope to see many of our fathers this Friday following open classrooms at the Father’s Day Liturgy. The liturgy will be in St Michael’s Church followed by awards, led by our Year 5/6 classes.
Retreat Day Reminders
Next Thursday all Year 6 students will participate in a Retreat Day. As part of the Retreat Day all students will write a response to their affirmation letter. If you are a parent or sponsor yet to send in a letter, please send it to school asap. A reminder that all non-sacramental students are asked to send in $5 to cover the catering for the day. The Retreat Day will be followed by a Parent Child Evening in St Michael’s Church for all Confirmation candidates and their families. Please continue to keep candidates in your thoughts and prayers as they will be confirmed Tuesday the 17th of September.
OLPH Youth Group
All Year 5 and 6 students are invited to join a new OLPH Youth Group. The group is based on 'Food, Faith and Fun' and is inclusive of all religions. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to make connections within our parish. The first meeting is this Friday the 30th of August at St Monica’s Parish Hall Evatt 6:30pm - 8pm. The cost is $5 per family which includes a meal, snack, and drinks. The group will be conducted by Youth Coordinators Aghil Babu and Geamila Raya. Please refer to the flier that was sent out on Compass for more information.
Fruits of the Holy Spirit - Gentleness
This term the students have explored the fruits of Kindness, Goodness and Faithfulness. This coming fortnight, they will begin exploring the fruit of Gentleness. Gentleness is choosing to care for others with our words and actions. It is showing others that they are valued, respected and loved. Just like all the fruits, gentleness needs to be practiced and nurtured. We pray that our students follow Jesus’ example and treat others with gentleness.

Anita Heiss Reads Bidhi Galing
An online literacy event for all families to celebrate Indigenous Literacy Day!
Wednesday 4 September
7pm – 7.30pm
Indigenous Literacy Day is held on the first Wednesday of September and is an annual celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples’ Stories, Cultures and Languages (find out more here: (https://www.indigenousliteracyfoundation.org.au/ild). To celebrate this year, the Council of Catholic School Parents NSW/ACT’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Committee has organised a wonderful online evening event open to all families in our schools.
We are delighted that Aboriginal Australian author Anita Heiss will read her book Bidhi Galing. Dr Anita Heiss AM is a proud member of the Wiradyuri nation of central New South Wales and one of Australia's most prolific and well-known authors publishing across genres including non-fiction, historical fiction, commercial fiction and children's fiction.
Her book Bidhi Galing (Big Rain) tells the story of the Great Flood of Gundagai in 1852 and the Wiradyuri heroes Yarri and Jacky Jacky who paddled bark canoes through raging floodwaters, risking their lives to save countless others. Primary school students aged 7–12 – and their families! – will love this story and the beautiful book illustrations. It’s a chance to sit down together and enjoy a nice, quiet time listening and reading, which is a wonderful way to support children’s literacy skills at home.
Go to the Council of Catholic School Parents NSW/ACT website to REGISTER or complete the form here: https://ccsp.schoolzineplus.com/form/63.

See you online on the 4th September at 7pm!
