Dear Parents and Carers,
A warm welcome back for Term 3. It’s great to see all the students refreshed after the break and growing taller by the minute!
Term Overviews will be sent home this week, please read these to keep up with any important information and events during this term- there is a lot on and many ways you can be involved.
A huge thank you to everyone in our community for their contribution to our Winter Woolies Day on the last day of Term 2. The Vinnies team have sent an email of thanks which is included in the RE section later in the newsletter. We also had a great result from our Book Fair- see the library section.

Confirmation Parent Formation Evening
This Thursday evening parents of students preparing for the Sacrament of Confirmation will gather in St Michael’s Church at 6pm. We pray that our candidates and their families will be truly blessed by the intervention of the Holy Spirit during this special time of preparation. Thank you to everyone involved, particularly Fr. Mick and the Parish Team, Emily O’Rourke and the Year 5/6 teachers.
Trivia Night (Adults Only)
We are looking forward to an evening of fun and laughter on Thursday August 8 in St Michael’s Hall. Can you donate any prizes or are able to assist the working group? Funds raised will go towards a load of chip bark for our Junior playground and new bubblers.
Parent/carer road user’s reminder
We have been notified that to support student safety, ACT Government will be using mobile speed camera vans and checking parking infringements around schools.
It’s great to be back, we are looking forward to another wonderful term of learning. Thank you for your continued support.
Many blessings,
Child Safety - Bridgette McCann
Safeguarding our students
The safeguarding of our students is the top priority for Catholic Education Canberra Goulburn.
Safeguarding is a term used to describe the protection of children and young persons including the vulnerable. This may be due to their age, culture or trauma background, or as they may be at risk of abuse, neglect or exploitation.
St Michael’s is committed to complying with the Child Safe Standards.
Have you read the Catholic Education Child Safety Policy? It addresses the Archdiocese of Canberra and Goulburn (CECG) commitment to the care and protection of children and young people. It identifies obligations and responses to provide child safe and supportive environments in CECG Schools, Schools, Early Learning Centres (ELC), school-aged care centres (SACs) and offices, and a framework for responding to concerns about the safety of children and young people. It implements both legislative and Catholic Church requirements. This policy applies to all CECG workers in all CECG workplaces and work-related activities.

This term teachers will continue to teach students about child safety. Look out for posters around the school that reminds our students of important themes and continue these conversations at home.

Whole School Focus: Come Holy Spirit
In Term 3, St Michael’s will continue with our Whole School Focus ‘Come Holy Spirit’ which aligns with the Year of the Holy Spirit. This Semester, we will be exploring the fruits of the Holy Spirit and how they can help and guide us. We will be focusing on the fruits of kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. We will continue to use scripture to explore how the Holy Spirit is represented visually. This term we will explore the image of the Holy Spirit as a dove.
Winter Woolies Day
A huge thank you to our St Michael’s families for supporting our Winter Woolies Day last term as part of the Vinnies Winter Appeal. What a comfy, warm day we had in our warm woolies gear! We had social justice workshops increasing the students' awareness about the needs in our community and the good works of St. Vincent De Paul. Best of all we filled a whole van with our amazing donations!! Below is the email our school received from Sharkie and the team at Vinnies over the holiday break:
“I just wanted to say thank you so much for the amazing time we had with your school. Your students were amazing and the workshops went really well thanks to their participation and the presence of your teachers. We also wanted to say thank you for the donations that your students provided. They are going to be so useful for us and our companions. Our jobs wouldn't be possible without the support of schools like yours and for that we are grateful.
A huge thank you to our St. Michael's community for their kind and incredibly generous donations.

The Great Book Swap – Thank you to the families who have donated books. Please keep them coming in!
This year we will again support the Indigenous Literacy Foundation (ILF) by hosting a Great Book Swap. The Great Book Swap will be held next term as part of our CBCA Book Week celebrations. To help make the day a success, we are asking each child to donate a book in good, second-hand quality. Books can be donated at any time this term and can be dropped at either the front office or given to your child’s teacher. On the day of the Great Book Swap each class will visit the book stall and be able to choose a book for a gold coin donation. All money raised will then be used by the ILF to purchase books for Indigenous children in remote communities. We hope you will help us to support this great initiative.
Book Fair – Thank you!
Thank you to all our families for supporting this year’s book fair! It was a huge success and we have received $827.12 in commission to spend on books. If you have any feedback about the fair, we would love to hear your thoughts. Please send any feedback to erin.hardwicke@cg.catholic.edu.au
Congratulations
Congratulations to Kye (5/6P) who has been selected to the ACT U12 AFL team. We wish Kye all the best at the Nationals in Victoria in August.
Belconnen Region Athletics
If your child has qualified to represent our school at the upcoming regional carnival you will receive the Compass event on Friday. Please provide consent online as soon as possible. All information regarding the event will be found on Compass.
OzTag Gala Day
Please note that the North Canberra Primary School Gala Days on Tuesday, August 6th, and Wednesday, August 7th will now be held at a different venue.
This is due to the large number of team entries and ACT Oztag needed a larger location to accommodate everyone.
The new venue is Kaleen Playing Fields, located at Birie and Turon Place, Kaleen.
We will update Compass with the field map and draw when we receive it.
3/4 OzTag Training
3/4 Oztag training will take place each Friday at lunchtime. We thank Mr Bradnam for volunteering his time to the role. If your child would like to bring runners to training they can be brought to school in their school bag.
Boorowa Touch Football and Netball Carnival
The Boorowa Touch Football and Netball Carnival will be held on Friday 25 October (Term 4, Week 2). We are now finalising the details, including the number of teams we will enter and the availability of coaches, managers and umpires to assist on the day. Please note that Boorowa is 1.5 hrs from Canberra and parents need to make their own arrangements for transport to and from the venue. The carnival is open to students in Years 3-6. If you would like your child to participate, please complete the Compass consent by Friday 2 August.

Next term, St Michael’s will be participating in National Science Week 2024 with the theme: Species Survival - More than just sustainability. The theme aims to highlight the importance of science and innovation in ensuring the survival and thriving of different species in an ever-changing world. We are encouraging students to plan, investigate and create a science experiment at home around the topic of sustainability to showcase at school in week 4.
Below are some links which might be good starting points for students’ experiments:
