Today marks the beginning of Lent with Ash Wednesday, we will gather as a school community for Mass at 12pm. During the Lenten season we are challenged to focus on what we can do to help others.
Swimming Carnival
It was a perfect weather day for our carnivals and celebration of water fun yesterday. We had sprinklers and bubbles with the younger students and the pool and splash park for our older students.
A HUGE thank you Erin Hardwicke for her organisation of the Swimming Carnival and Victoria De Mattia for the water fun day. Thanks also to Kylie Arena who assisted Erin in preparing the recording platform. We couldn’t run a carnival without the support of our Classroom Support Assistants and particularly our parent volunteers who came to help us out. Thanks to any parents/carers who took some time off to support us. It was a great day for all.
Catalyst
Brooke Wardana one of our coaches from WA will be joining us on Friday at St Michael’s. Brooke will be doing demonstration lessons and will also be coaching staff as we continue to implement high impact teaching practice (HITP) across the school.
Registration and Compliance
Next Wednesday and Thursday a panel of visitors from CECG will be visiting us to ensure we are compliant for ongoing Registration as an ACT Non-Government school. The panel will be informally chatting to staff, looking at documentation and generally seeing how St Michael’s operates. It will be great to welcome back Pat Ellis in his role as Education Lead in Performance and Improvement with CECG.
Drills
This week we are completing evacuation and lock down drills as part of our Emergency Management Plans. We conduct these throughout the year to ensure we are all safe and know what to do in an emergency.
Community Council
Please see a section from Community Council after our recent meeting, thank you for the way you continue to support our school.
Many Blessings,
Principal
Community Council Corner
The Community Council met for the first time for the year on Wednesday, 15 Feb 2023. The Council consists of Judy Egan, Bridgette McCann and Natasha Kapantais representing the school with Julie Halley, Shane Love, Caitlin Blackford and I representing parents and the wider community. The council discussed several topics including school and council finances, student numbers, upcoming registration and compliance process, feedback from the Parents Information Night and possible social events and other activities during 2023. No firm decisions were made but more of these topics will be discussed in more detail over the coming meetings and will be communicated to the wider community. If you have any questions of the council please feel free to email us directly via office.stmichaelsps@cg.catholic.edu.au or alternatively, I drive an old mustard yellow Kombi so if you see me during drop off or pick up please feel free to have a chat.

Religious Education News - Lisa Mammoliti
Today we commenced the Season of Lent.
Lent is the 40 days which precede the great celebration of Easter through prayer, fasting and almsgiving.
During Lent, Christians are called to reconnect and deepen their faith.
Lent has a penitential character but is a joyful season as we anticipate the resurrection of the Lord at Easter.
Prayer
God, may your light guide my day, and your spirit bring me peace. Amen.
God’s blessings,
Lisa Mammoliti

K-2 Water Fun Day was a Hoot!
Swimming Carnival Congratulations and Thank You!
We had a fantastic day at our school swimming carnival yesterday. It was great to see so many of our students competing in races; whether it be for selection to regional teams or just for fun and to earn house points! The team spirit on the day was infectious and the students behaviour was exemplary.
A very heartfelt thank you to all the parent volunteers who gave their time to support us. Without your help we can not run days like this and on behalf of the staff, students and parent community, I thank you for your generosity.
Ribbons will be presented at next Friday morning's assembly (3rd March). Parents are welcome to join us.
Students who will represent our school a the Belconnen Regions Championships will receive their notes next week. Belconnen Region Championships will take place at the AIS on Tuesday 28th March.
School Sport ACT - ACT Teams Selection - Important Information
Please see the School Sport ACT webpage http://www.schoolsportaustralia.edu.au/stateterritory-school-sport-offices/school-sport-act/ or Facebook page for the most up to date information.
SCHOOL SPORT ACT TRIALS – Please keep an eye on the School Sport ACT website www.schoolsportact.asn.au for upcoming ACT trials. The process for registering can be found below. If you need any assistance registering your child please feel free to ask for assistance.
How to register your child with School Sport ACT
School Sport ACT now collects all registration information online – this is to prevent the movement to and fro of a paper note and have all information readily available to officials prior to the trial. As this process incurs a fee for data storage, system maintenance and admin, a small $5 fee payment via credit card will be required.
- Go to the School Sport ACT website – www.schoolsportact.asn.au
- Click Register (top right corner of homepage) for an Account – enter parent details and password
- A confirmation email will be sent to your chosen email that will contain a link that you must click on to verify the email account.
- Click Log In (top right hand corner of home page) enter password then click on top tab My Profile
- You will see a ‘dashboard’ of your information, click green box to Add Student – enter student and medical details and save.
- Go to the Sports Tab – choose your specific sport, click on Trial Information box then click on the Register to Trial link.
- Select your child’s name from the dropdown box and then enter the optional fields for Playing History, Preferred Position (if applicable) and Representative Experience. If you are already in the system, ensure your child’s school is up to date in your profile – have they moved onto High School?
Please contact me via email if you have any questions, feedback or are able to offer your assistance at any of our sporting events throughout the year.
Looking forward to another big year of sporting participation.
Erin Hardwicke
As several of the students at our school have a life threatening allergy to nuts and related products we have adopted a NUT FREE policy.
We ask you to support our efforts by ensuring that your child does not bring peanuts, peanut butter, nutella or other nut related products to school in their lunch boxes. This will require you to take note of the content of items such as muesli bars etc.
We appreciate your support in ensuring the health and safety of all our students.
